United Way of Thunder Bay’s Great Lighthouse Rescue returns June 11 with $25k matching challenge.
Thunder Bay, ON, June 8, 2026 – All hands on deck! Thunder Bay’s most adventurous fundraiser is returning to the harbour this June as local community leaders, agency representatives, and volunteers prepare to be marooned at the Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse.
On Thursday, June 11, participants in United Way of Thunder Bay’s fourth annual Great Lighthouse Rescue, presented by Memorial Home Hardware, will leave shore with one mission: raise enough funds to earn their rescue. With support from family, friends, colleagues, and the broader community, castaways will spend the day fundraising from the iconic lighthouse until they reach their goals and secure passage back to land.
Adding to the excitement, Honorary Commander Cliff Friesen and Susan Jones have once again stepped forward to support the Great Lighthouse Rescue through a $25,000 Matching Gift Challenge. Their generosity will double the impact of donations designated to participating partner agencies, helping local organizations continue to deliver vital programs and services throughout the community.
“We’ve seen firsthand how generosity can create lasting change in our community,” says Jones. “By matching donations, we hope to encourage even more people to get involved and support the important work being done through the Great Lighthouse Rescue. Every gift will go twice as far, helping local organizations continue to make a difference where it’s needed most,” adds Friesen.
Funds raised through the event will support local programs and services that help people across Thunder Bay overcome barriers and build brighter futures. Proceeds will advance United Way’s work in three key impact areas:
- All in for YOUTH – working with students, families, schools, agencies, government, businesses, and community members to build a network of support that helps young people reach their full potential.
- Pathways to HOME – supporting programs, projects, and wraparound services that address the root causes of homelessness –such as mental health, addictions, trauma, and poverty.
- NOURISH the North – building a sustainable, circular food system that strengthens our region.
The day’s rescue operations will once again be led by the sailors of HMCS Griffon and the Royal Canadian Navy. Participants will be transported to and from the lighthouse aboard military vessels, adding a memorable and uniquely Thunder Bay experience to the fundraising challenge.
“The Great Lighthouse Rescue combines creativity, camaraderie, and community spirit, making it one of our most anticipated fundraising events,” says Albert Brulé, CEO of United Way of Thunder Bay. “Every year, we see people step outside their comfort zones to support causes that matter. The funds raised help ensure local organizations can continue delivering essential programs and services to those who need them most, proving that BETTER is POSSIBLE. Let’s make this year our biggest rescue mission yet.”
United Way of Thunder Bay also recognizes the support of its event sponsors, including the Port of Thunder Bay and presenting sponsor, Memorial Home Hardware, whose commitment helps make the Great Lighthouse Rescue possible.
Says Shannon Sauer, owner, Memorial Home Hardware; “As a locally owned business, we believe in giving back to the community that has supported us since the beginning. The Great Lighthouse Rescue is a fun and uniquely Thunder Bay event, but behind the excitement is an important purpose – raising funds to help people access the support they need. Memorial Home Hardware is proud to serve as Presenting Sponsor and to stand alongside United Way in building a stronger, healthier community for everyone.”
Members of the public are encouraged to follow along, support their favourite castaways, and help unlock rescues throughout the day. Rescue missions will depart from the Navy Boatshed at 65 Marina Park Drive beginning at 10:00 a.m. on June 11 and continue throughout the day. “Have BBQ Will Travel” will be on-site providing grub.
